Its virtues & characteristics

Passionflower was well known to Native Americans as they used it as a poultice to treat bumps and bruises. Discovered by Spanish missionaries in Peru in 1569, it was called Passiflora incarnata based on its Christ-like appearance. Once it was brought back to Europe, it quickly became a universal remedy. [4]. In the 19th century, it was attributed with calming and sedative virtues, but we had to wait for the inter-war period for passionflower to be recognised as a medicinal plant in France and the United States. [7]

As a source of many active compounds and particularly rich in alcaloids and flavonoids [6], passionflower has sedative, soothing and pain relief properties based on the synergy of several molecules which play a role in the nervous system. [2] [4] [5] [6] [8] Used to relieve anxiety, nervousness and also sleep disorders, it corresponds perfectly to expectations of the moment. It should become even more popular on the food supplements and the infusions market within the bleak context related to COVID 19 and its subsequent needs.

Reasoned and responsible farming conditions

Providing quality botanical ingredients and being part of a responsible approach is our key priority at Natural Origins. Each and everyone of us has a role to play to preserve our ecosystems [3], and it’s along those lines that we choose our partnerships and we have decided to work with a family farm particularly committed to biodiversity for our passionflower.

On this farm, all the staff is aware and endeavour to apply measures to protect the surrounding fauna and flora: dozens of different plant species are grown and agroforestry is reintroduced for certain cultivations in order to let the natural tree environment grow while preserving the development of all species.

The fauna is preserved and grazing fields are used by wild animals. Forests are nurtured to prevent the risk of fires and measures are implemented to protect the soil for future generations to continue benefiting from fertile lands.
