Halfway between conifer and a broadleaf tree, the Rosa centifolia rose’s name “cabbage rose“ refers to its great number of flower petals and is a hybrid rose probably derived from Rosa gallica, Rosa moschata, Rosa canina and Rosa damascena (1).

Usage of Rosa centifolia

The flower, mainly pink has a sweet and delicate scent. It was exported to Europe as a decoration object and for confetti for weddings. More recently, it has been added to cosmetic oils and is now known for its usage as an essence for perfume.

Products derived from roses can likewise be used as an aroma or a natural colouring agent for the agro-food industry and it’s for this application that Natural Origins developed a Rosa centifolia powder.

To formulate this ingredient, we have chosen sourcing from a preserved and private garden in Iran with the desire of offering more than just a raw material by telling the entire story about this rose…

Our sourcing

  • A private garden located in the heart of the eastern province of Fars

Our Rosa centifolia grows in mountain areas of the eastern province of Fars, to the east of the Darab county. This flower is cultivated in an area of several square kilometers around the small village of Layzangan (translated literally as “between stones”). It is locally called “Talooneh“.

  • A preserved area based on artisanal harvesting

Collecting Rosa centifolia is done by men and women from the neighbouring communities of Layzangan. This species does not have repeat flowering and is harvested once a year in April/May. Without denaturing this preserved area where the mountain snow melts at the beginning of spring, and is then replaced by an array of flowers. These private flower pickers sort and clean the flowers on the spot and dry the flowers in the mountains on cloth. They are then always brought to the village by traditional means...

  • Crops for an improved lifestyle

When our partner discovered Layzangan, over 40 years ago, he was faced with a very poor and isolated population with no schools or doctors. The different harvests in the region have considerably helped these villagers, who now have a higher standard of living which is comparable to most of the best villages in the country.
