The sleep-inducing herbal teas product range is constantly expanding and the market continues to grow. An article in "Linéaires" (1) explains that the Les 2 Marmottes infuser has just launched a blend of botanicals with sedative properties called "1, 2, 3... Sommeil (1,2, 3 Sleep)!", telling consumers that they are on the road to peace of mind with this soothing trio".
In fact, a number of disorders associated with sleep deprivation have been highlighted, along with their harmful effects on health. At Natural Origins, we offer you botanical ingredients, particularly Made in France ingredients, dedicated to this sector for your infusions and beverages.
Sleep problems and their consequences
While sleep is essential to well-being and psychological balance, three out of ten French people (29%) say they are dissatisfied with their nights, and this is particularly true of people in lower income brackets (43%), young people (39%) and women (32%). This sleep disorder also increased during Covid-19.
Anxiety and depression play a major role in sleep disorders (2) which include insomnia, sleep apnoea and hypersomnia.
The French Public Health Barometer survey reveals that the total sleep time of adults has fallen below the recommended 7 hours a day, with more than a third of French people sleeping less than 6 hours a day.
However, epidemiological studies (3) research shows that sleeping too little increases the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and accidents. It also reduces alertness and concentration, leading to irritability and negative consequences at work as well as in personal and family life.
Sleep in France: figures and products
According to a May 2021 study by IFOP (4), sleep problems reported by the French are on the increase, due in particular to certain factors (such as various screens use) which are contributing to this rise. Sleep disorders affect 66% of 18-75 year-olds today, compared with 49% in 2017.
This public health issue is reflected in the growing number of recipes, blends and infusions manufacturers' offers that promote sleep based on the calming and sedative properties of botanicals. Brands launching new products with sleep claims are using botanicals known since ancient times as natural sleep aids. Among them, the leading products to help you get back to sleep and into the arms of Morpheus include (5):
Chamomile
Chamomile is one of the best-known botanicals for helping you get a good night's sleep. Relaxing, it helps you fall asleep. Its sedative properties and calming virtues, thanks to its anti-inflammatory apigenin compound, soothe nervous agitation that is harmful to sleep (6).
Lavender
The active ingredients in lavender, and in particular its essential oil, are thought to act on the production of cortisol, the stress hormone. It is therefore a botanical with relaxing benefits and soothing, sedative effects (7) (8).
Lemon balm
The antispasmodic properties of this botanical make it an ally when poor sleep is due to digestive problems. Its soothing and relaxing properties help you fall asleep. Combined with valerian, it has the same effect as a chemical sleeping pill (9).
Sweet orange
Sweet orange, and in particular its essential oil, helps to reduce anxiety (10) (11).
Linden
In infusion, its flowers and leaves have soothing and sedative properties (12).
Valerian
Valerian, with its sedative and relaxing properties, is ideal for calming nervous agitation and anxiety. It is thought to help improve sleep quality by reducing the time it takes to fall asleep and activating the release of GABA (13).
Verbena
Based on its sedative properties, verbena is thought to reduce stress and anxiety (14).
"Au lit les marmots", "Bouquet magique pour nuit de rêves", "Infusion sweet dreams", "Fée nuit", "Bonne nuit", "Pack nuit calme", "Tisane miraculeuse", "Routine sommeil mélatonine", "Tapage nocturne"... are just a few examples of the trendy names for herbal teas and infusions devoted exclusively to sleep and combining the above-mentioned botanicals.
Sleep quality, physical and mental relaxation are all part of the claims made by manufacturers, with products that help you fall asleep naturally and calm your nerves at night.
