Since its creation, Natural Origins has been developing its sourcing for the spirits market. For the past 25 years, our company has been travelling the world in order to identify new terroirs, to set up sustainable supply chains and thus provide the best botanicals.
Our driving force has seduced the greatest professionals in the world of spirits and alcohols. Our age-old experience and know-how in transforming botanicals perpetuate the satisfaction of our customers.
The processing stages: dedicated know-how adapted to the spirits market as a "flavour passers"
Thanks to its sourcing, Natural Origins offers you natural ingredients ranging from whole botanicals to dry or liquid extracts. We even support you right up to the design of exclusive finished products!
Our industrial process involves "various successive operations", as Karl Moog, our production manager, explains.
Our expert provides a detailed step by step description of our industrial know-how and our experience in botanicals for spirits:
1- Receipt of raw materials
After checking the botanical in a tasting panel, we check its macroscopic appearance. In case of irregularities or presence of foreign bodies and insects, we carry out rigorous sorting as well as disinsectisation.
2- Cut
Our standard cutting size is 0.5-3cm for leaves, aerial parts, roots or rhizomes, and 5-7mm for seeds, berries and fruits. We also offer to cut to the size wanted, according to our customers. Some of the so-called "high processing” botanicals are cut by a specialised service provider. These include, for example, roots and products that are a bit stringy, such as licorice, burdock, artichoke, eleutherococcus and dandelion, but this is also the case for ginger or very dense and robust botanicals such as aloe block or acacia catechu.
3- Sifting
We have different sizes of sieves intended for the physical separation of the raw material regardless of the product used. It is not systematic. It is by sifting that we create the calibration. Depending on the case, sieving may possibly be carried out before the cut.
4- Grinding
Our equipment is made up of knife mills for clean and sharp cuts mainly used for spirit botanicals. The grinding process has been internalised in order to be closer to the specific needs of our customers.
5- Elimination of possible metallic residues
Magnets and detectors are used to remove metal parts that could damage the products and protect all our production lines during sifting and grinding operations.
6- Packaging
The products obtained are then put in 10 to 25K bags, stored under suitable conditions, ready for delivery.
7- Cleaning
This is mandatory between two botanical productions to avoid cross contamination. Cleaning is standardised by an internal procedure and is subject to strict checks.
Our Taste Business Unit: a specialised team dedicated to the sensory experience
For more than 25 years, Natural Origins has been dedicated to the natural ingredient needs of the food and nutraceutical industries.
In order to be able to respond more effectively to market requirements, the company has been structured over the last two years with two specialised Business Units (BU):
The Taste BU: for the food and beverage market needs (teas and infusions, beer and spirits)
The Health BU: for food supplements world stakeholders’ needs along with those wishing to diversify into health oriented products.
The main interest in distinguishing between these two BU is specialising in both "Taste" and "Health" product ranges which cover different expertise.
- « Taste » ingredients are focused on the organoleptic profile, in search of a terroir, a particular origin…
- « Health » ingredients call on notions of phyto-active, components, ratio, etc.
This distinction and structuring of the portfolio allows us to better target our markets, our customers and to communicate using the vocabulary adapted to industrialists by positioning ourselves as experts in each sector.
The summary table clearly distinguishes both approaches:
Features / BU | BU TASTE | BU HEALTH |
MISSION | Focus: organoleptic. | Focus: health. |
TARGETED MARKETS | Food, beverages, teas and herbal infusions, beer and spirits. |
Nutraceutical, beverages and functional foods, sports nutrition. |
KEY PRODUCTS |
Cut, blended and / or flavoured botanicals, Taste Giving Extracts (TGE). |
Botanical powders, Optifine® powders, Clear Water Soluble extracts (CWS), health extracts, beehive products. |
THE WORD FROM THE HEAD OF BU |
"All BU Taste products share a common point: a studied & qualified supply chain". |
"Formulations of botanical ingredients, rich in health actives derived from well-managed supply chains to respond to the development of well-being products". |
Taste BU: BU flavour passers!
Dedicated to the spirits market, the Taste BU offers a privileged and tailor-made approach with adapted and relevant solutions for all the actors of the profession through:
- Specific and dedicated sourcing
- A personalised approach with customised solutions within our Botanical Studio® and tasting sessions
- Creation of specific and confidential product ranges.
Each approach is worked within a precise framework including both the sought gustatory aspect and the accurate reproduction of the organoleptic dimension of the botanicals, all consolidated by analyses.
In 2022, we set up glossaries and tasting sheets in order to systematically classify and evaluate the botanicals during the approach work carried out with the help of our R&D flavourist. |
We also offer workshop days aimed at testing, applying, tasting and creating formulations.
These days are an opportunity to:
- Share our experience and to provide close support for your project
- Suggest and propose fragrances, aromas and flavours of natural ingredients to build strong brand identity
- Specific botanicals following customer specifications: taste, geographical origin, choice of spices...
- Be able to emphasise formulations based on the original nature of blends
- Offer expertise adapted to all clients’ ideas in a unique & confidential manner
Supply chains and traceability
Natural Origins has a long history of experience in sourcing, and is constantly setting up sustainable supply chains with new terroirs. In this sense, this unique approach highlights your finished products, ensuring real added value.
The quality of our raw materials (taste, smell, visual control...) is guaranteed throughout each stage of production. We are thus able to ensure total traceability based on a secure procurement supply chain.
Natural Origins also provides you with information/technical sheets "supply chains" to describe in detail the characteristics of the sourcing of botanicals.

TGEs: a response adapted to your formulations
In addition to the botanicals cuts made by the Natural Origins team, botanical extracts have come to complete and enrich our offer.
TGEs are natural extracts which capture the aromatic profile of a botanical (volatile fraction + principal fraction) through a hydro distillation / hydro-alcoholic extraction and concentration combined procedure.
Available in liquid and powder version, they come close to the original botanical.
TGEs are value added, natural, differentiating, healthy and particularly adapted to spirits, solutions to meet market needs, and they have the capacity of enhancing your formulations and respond to the great demand for transparency (geographical origin of the raw materials) and traceability.
Solutions with infinite marketing potential, they allow you to tell the story of your product based on its composition, to design a universe rich in flavours and to open your creative possibilities.

For TGEs 0.0 (aqueous extracts adapted to alcohol free beverages), we offer angelica root, coriander and juniper berries...
And we remind you that all our TGEs powders, based on their formulation, are perfectly adapted to "non-alcoholic" beverages.
