Natural Origins, which specialises in sourcing and processing aromatic and medicinal botanicals, has selected authentic-tasting ingredients for spirits and beers. We present our core production, our quality supply chains, our requirements and our integrated solutions.
"Behind every great spirit lies a great botanical" - Amy Stewart
For three decades now, we've been supplying the spirits world with aromatic botanicals from far and wide. Driven by a passion for botany, we source more than fifty specific botanicals every day and then process them on our production lines in Soyons, near Valence (France). It's also, and above all, the esteem in which we hold our long-standing producers and partners that has driven us to share this experience with you, and to tell the world how great the journey is.
Through this presentation, we hope to share our world with you, and even inspire you to dream, by retracing the history of the botanicals that can then be found in the most beautiful bottles on stalls throughout the world.
Our process and our commitments
A few figures
Some of these botanicals are organic and For Life certified, a standard representing both our commitment to responsible supply chains and our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policy, the pillars of which are:
- the environment,
- people,
- and responsible sourcing.
What's more, we go even further than this Fair Life based on certified For for Life products. Because at Natural Origins, fairness knows no boundaries!
- Our cut botanicals are available in 5-7mm, 0.5-3cm and customised cuts.
- Our raw materials are 100% analysed, with over 1,200 samples sent each year to specialist external laboratories, most of which are ISO 17025:2017 certified and COFRAC accredited.
- Specific products can be analysed on request.
Quality
Our harvests, which are as recent as possible, are carried out in established and historic supply chains with in-depth botanical knowledge. Our spirit botanicals have a strong, authentic flavour, which you can discover at our in-house tasting workshop sessions (see below). We have also set up precise tasting glossaries to qualify and describe our botanicals, and ensure their organoleptic conformity.
Requirements and conformity
Our purchasing charter is precise and based on ethics, thanks to the creation of responsible and sustainable supply chains. We source directly from our farmers and cooperatives. Our processing is 100% in-house. Disinsectisation is carried out in a chamber by removing oxygen or by freezing. The sorting unit is based on gravimetry.
The botanicals are cut in-house using a shredder with knives for clean, sieved cuts. The plants are then stored in 10-25kg paper bags, which are then transferred to our permanent hygrometry controlled stock. This represents more than 1,000 tons of botanicals, while our total annual stock is more than 2,500 tons of botanicals (a large proportion of which corresponds to our customers' annual contracts).
Natural Origins solutions
An integrated solution: the sensory Workshop
Natural Origins offers you the chance to take part in unique one-day workshop where you can taste botanicals from our catalogue and discover new sources and trends.
Extracting botanical for the sense
In our botanical extraction plant near Valence (France), we produce our natural aromatic extracts, Taste Giving Extracts, which offer an aromatic profile as close to the botanical as possible!
The botanicals extracted on our production lines have been pre-cut on the same site. This method, which respects organoleptic qualities, enables the volatile aromatic fraction of each botanical ingredient to be recovered at low temperature.
We offer 2 formulations:
- solid, water-soluble, suitable for 0.0 and with a choice of carrier agent (maltodextrin from wheat, maize, potato, tapioca, gum arabic, etc.),
- liquid, on ethanol or 0.0.
